Typhoon Mikala, a tropical storm, formed early this morning (20th) and is heading towards the waters northeast of the Philippines in a west-northwest direction. The Meteorological Agency stated that environmental conditions are favorable for the typhoon's development, with a high probability of it intensifying into a moderate typhoon. It is predicted to be closest to Taiwan on the 25th, but its path changes still require observation. The Central Meteorological Agency issued a tropical storm formation message early this morning. The tropical depression, previously located west of Guam, has developed into a tropical storm, designated as No. 7, Mikala (named by Thailand: MEKKHALA). It is forecast to move northwest by west, then north, towards the waters south of Ryukyu. The Meteorological Agency stated today that Typhoon Mikala will still be far from Taiwan this weekend. However, before the 22nd, guided by the Pacific high-pressure system, it will approach the waters northeast of the Philippines in a west-northwest direction. During this period, environmental conditions will be conducive to the typhoon's development, making it highly probable that it will become a moderate typhoon, and its radius will also expand slightly. The Meteorological Agency indicated that from the 23rd onwards, the Pacific high-pressure system will weaken, and Typhoon Mikala is expected to turn northward. It will then move north along the waters east of Taiwan, predicted to be closest to Taiwan on the 25th. The Meteorological Agency mentioned that although the current forecast path suggests limited impact on Taiwan from the typhoon's cloud system, there is considerable uncertainty in the path prediction. It is still possible that the typhoon might take a more westward path northward, which would increase its impact on Taiwan and its surrounding waters. The Meteorological Agency also reminded that after the typhoon moves north, Taiwan's environment will shift to a southwest wind. After the 25th, the weather in southern Taiwan will become unstable, and localized afternoon thunderstorms may occur in other areas. According to information from the Central Meteorological Agency, as of 8 AM today, the center of Typhoon Mikala was located at 14.5 degrees North latitude and 137.8 degrees East longitude, moving west at a speed of 18 kilometers per hour. The central pressure is 990 millibars, with maximum sustained winds near the center of 25 meters per second and instantaneous maximum gusts of 33 meters per second. The average radius of the seven-level wind is 120 kilometers. (Editor: Liu Xianghua) Source Link: https://www.rti.org.tw/news?uid=3&pid=215657
