A senior US official stated today (19th) that Israel and the Lebanese militia group Hezbollah have reached a consensus to reimplement a ceasefire. This comes after a sharp escalation in the Israel-Lebanon conflict, jeopardizing the possibility of the United States and Iran further facilitating long-term peace in the Middle East. According to reports from Reuters and the Associated Press, US and Iranian negotiators were originally scheduled to hold talks in Switzerland today. However, according to sources familiar with the matter, Iranian officials insisted that they would only engage in dialogue if the conflict in Lebanon ceased, leading to the last-minute cancellation of the talks. The US official announced the ceasefire news at 4 PM local time in Lebanon today (9 PM Taiwan time), effective immediately. He also revealed that the agreement was jointly facilitated by the United States, Qatar, and Iran. According to the latest statistics from the Lebanese Ministry of Health, Israeli airstrikes on the southern part of the country earlier today (19th) resulted in at least 47 deaths and 97 injuries. The Israeli military stated that 4 soldiers were killed in Hezbollah attacks. Iran has consistently insisted that any agreement must include a ceasefire in Lebanon. Its Foreign Ministry spokesperson emphasized that the United States bears direct responsibility for Israel's attacks on Lebanon and stated that Tehran will take all necessary measures to defend its interests.
