The Central Weather Administration of the Ministry of Communications stated today (19th) that the weather will be stable before the 24th, with local high temperatures reaching up to 36 degrees Celsius. A tropical depression has formed in the waters near Guam and is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Mikra as early as tomorrow, approaching Taiwan on the 25th and 26th, but the path remains highly uncertain.
A tropical depression formed at 8 AM today in the waters near Guam. Forecaster Liu Peiteng of the CWA stated that it is expected to develop into the seventh tropical storm of the year, Mikra, as early as tomorrow and strengthen into a moderate typhoon by the 22nd.
The Dragon Boat Festival holiday begins today and lasts for three days, with tomorrow being the second day. Liu Peiteng said that due to the gradual strengthening of the Pacific high pressure, the weather will be stable across the island before the 24th, with only scattered brief showers in some mountainous areas. High temperatures in western and central Taiwan will range from 33 to 35 degrees Celsius, with local areas potentially reaching 36 degrees. High temperatures in eastern Taiwan will generally be around 33 to 34 degrees. Taitung may also experience local 36-degree temperatures due to possible föhn winds.
Liu Peiteng stated that the tropical system is expected to approach Taiwan on the 25th and 26th. Its outer cloud bands will bring localized rainfall to Taiwan, with southern Taiwan possibly experiencing brief scattered showers or thunderstorms, and other areas having afternoon thunderstorms.
Liu Peiteng pointed out that the future path of the tropical system will depend on the strength of the Pacific high pressure, and the uncertainty remains high. It is predicted that the system may move to the waters east of the Philippines and then turn north to the waters south of Ryukyu. If its northward turn is closer to Taiwan, it is not ruled out that it could approach Taiwan more closely.
Liu Peiteng said that the tropical system is predicted to move to the waters east of the Philippines on the 23rd. At that time, outer long waves will reach the waters near Taiwan. Coastal areas including the Keelung North Coast, eastern Taiwan, and the Hengchun Peninsula should be aware of long waves starting from the 23rd. (Editor: Chung Chin-lung)
