Mainland Affairs Council Deputy Minister Liang Wen-chieh's recent remarks that "Pineapple cherimoya is an agricultural product that Taiwanese people hardly eat and completely relies on the CCP's breath" have sparked discussion. In response, Liang Wen-chieh stated today (20th) that his original intention was that the domestic consumption of pineapple cherimoya is insufficient. If this matter can make everyone realize the problem and be willing to buy and eat more to form a habit, it is also a good thing. "Being scolded personally is nothing." Liang Wen-chieh recently stated at a regular press conference of the Mainland Affairs Council that Taiwanese people hardly eat pineapple cherimoya, that it has almost no market in Taiwan, and that over 90% relies on China, making it an agricultural product that completely relies on the CCP's breath. Liang Wen-chieh's remarks have sparked discussion. In response, Liang Wen-chieh posted on the social platform Threads today (20th) that his response at the press conference regarding Taitung's pineapple cherimoya was distorted by taking it out of context. However, his original intention was clear: the fundamental problem of pineapple cherimoya is insufficient domestic consumption, forcing it to rely on the mainland Chinese market, which also provides the other side with a political tool to exploit. Liang Wen-chieh said his original intention was to worry about farmers falling into the "raise, trap, kill" trap again. If this matter can make everyone realize the problem and be willing to buy and eat more to form a habit, reducing external dependence, then it is also a good thing. "Being scolded personally is nothing." Liang Wen-chieh emphasized, "We must form a habit, because that is sustainable, not just a political topic that fades away." He said he hopes pineapple cherimoya, like dragon fruit, can develop from an introduced variety into a part of Taiwanese life, available for purchase and consumption from fruit stalls to supermarkets to restaurants, with a per capita consumption of about 2.5 kilograms per person per year. Moreover, due to large domestic consumption, export demand is less than 1%. This can stabilize farmers' income and eliminate dependence on the other side. "Dragon fruit can do it, and I believe pineapple cherimoya can too." Beijing recently held a "对接签约会" (docking and signing ceremony) for 10 measures related to Taiwan at the Cross-Strait Forum held in Xiamen, Fujian. The content included the procurement of Taiwanese pineapple cherimoya, wax apples, tea, and groupers. In this regard, Liang Wen-chieh stated that the government needs to understand the content of the agreements and their impact on Taiwan's agriculture.
