Legislative Yuan Speaker Han Kuo-yu led a delegation to visit the United States on the 21st. Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu pointed out that the US invited the Speaker of the Taiwanese Parliament to lead a cross-party delegation of legislators to visit. He believes that the US arrangement is also to erase the impression left by KMT Chairwoman Sylvia Chang's visit to the US, which suggested Taiwan supports the 'One China' principle, allowing the majority opinion of Taiwan to be presented in American public opinion, which is also positive for Taiwan-US relations.
Joseph Wu was interviewed by Liu Fang-ci, host of Formosa TV's "News Observation Station" a few days ago, and the program was broadcast this afternoon (20th).
Regarding Sylvia Chang's remarks during her US visit that Chinese President Xi Jinping is the person who treats Taiwan best in the world, Joseph Wu stated, "A 'terrorist lover' might also feel they treat you very well." China is a country that bullies Taiwan. Xi Jinping loves Taiwan and wants to devour it, but Xi Jinping has been in power in China for over a decade, and the verbal and military threats against Taiwan have only increased. Such remarks not only seem inconsistent with the facts but also represent China's unscrupulous methods.
Joseph Wu said that Sylvia Chang's claim that Xi Jinping has goodwill towards Taiwan and feels wronged by being misunderstood is incredible. This is because, in reality, only Taiwanese people can decide their own future and live without being ruled by China. One should never confuse cause and effect. If China threatens Taiwan, yielding to China naturally means not being subjected to violence. If one does not comply, then violent coercion is used. The international community sees this very clearly, and this is also why the general reaction from the international community to Sylvia Chang's visit to the US was negative.
Joseph Wu pointed out that the US understands Taiwanese public opinion very well. Due to the sabotage of the National Defense Authorization Act by Sylvia Chang and a few others, budgets for drones and other items were cut. Therefore, the US Congress invited Han Kuo-yu during the session to lead a cross-party delegation of legislators to visit the US. Although Han Kuo-yu is from the KMT, leading a cross-party delegation can present a moderate stance and represent the majority opinion of Taiwan.
Joseph Wu believes that this arrangement by the US is, to some extent, intended to erase the impression left by Sylvia Chang's visit to the US, which suggested Taiwan supports the 'One China' principle and the 1992 Consensus, and opposes Taiwan independence. This will allow Taiwan's true majority opinion to be presented in American public opinion and have a positive impact on future Taiwan-US relations.
Speaking about his vision during his tenure, Joseph Wu pointed out that Taiwan-US relations are currently on the right track and are of utmost importance. Issues such as arms sales and tariffs are being resolved successively. Taiwan-US investments are bringing about a reliable supply chain, forming a symbiotic partnership. Secondly, in addition to maintaining diplomatic relations with allies, Taiwan can also establish diplomatic relations or representative offices with special diplomatic privileges with other countries. Furthermore, he plans to integrate his past relationships at the grassroots level and with the industry into a "comprehensive diplomacy" policy, making Taiwan a country respected and liked by the international community.
